The Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List had a local feel to it. Georgetown’s Omer Yurtseven, Maryland’s Anthony Cowan, and VCU’s Marcus Santo-Silva all appeared on the list. The trophy is giving to the USBWA’s Player of the year.
Yurtseven has provided Georgetown with a consistent paint presence. He leads the Hoyas in scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.6 rpg) while shooting 52.6 percent from the floor. He’s also second in the Big East and fifth in the country in offensive rebounds per game.
Cowan has had an explosive start to his senior year. The starting point guard for the third ranked Maryland Terps leads the team in points per game (16.2) and assists (4.2). He was named MVP of the Orlando Invitational where he averaged 24 points a game.
VCU’s Santos-Silva is almost averaging a double-double for the undefeated VCU Rams. Through eight games he has career-highs in points (13.8), shooting percentage (62.5%), rebounds (9.5), assists (1.3), steals (1.8), and blocks (1.3).
