Notre Dame Football: Week One Takeaways

The first half of the Notre Dame-Louisville game probably had Irish fans feeling a tad bit concerned.

The Irish defense struggled with Louisville’s offense in the first half. Ian Book didn’t look very Ian Book.

But after a comedic, three plays-three fumbles, the Irish scored a touchdown before half and ceased control of the game.

The second half was more what was expected. Notre Dame’s defense only gave up three points. Book threw a beautiful 26 yard touchdown pass to Tommy Tremble. Notre Dame fans around the country exhaled a bit.

Going into week two there are still some concerns.

  • Despite Tony Jones Jr. having a big night, the Irish were stopped on several times on third-and-2-and-less. Those are drive killers, that against the Georgia’s and Michigan’s of the world, they’ll have to convert.
  • Book didn’t seem sharp, especially in the first half. Perhaps it was the pressure of having expectations but his play must improve. He fumbled twice (losing one). He was sacked three times. At times, he almost looked unsure of himself.
  • Missed tackles on the edge must stop. Yes, it’s week one but missed tackles lead to drive extenders. Louisville rushed for 249 yards. That’s brutal folks.

At the end of the day, when you have the tough schedule the Irish have, a win is a win especially on the road. It’s much easier learning and adjusting after a win than a loss.
