Both Lehigh and American came into Sunday’s game at 1-2 in the conference but it felt different. Lehigh was coming off a tough loss to Loyola (MD) while American had a lot of good things come out of a competitive loss to Bucknell.
Tim Kempton scored 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the 79-73 victory. The Mountain Hawks also welcomed back Kyle Leufroy back from injury and he didn’t disappoint. Leufroy scored 16 points including 2-3 from the 3-point line.
American was led by their all everything freshman, Sa’eed Nelson. Nelson had 19 points and 8 rebounds. The Eagles also got big contributions from Delante Jones and Lonnie Rivera.
Lehigh used an 8-0 run in the first half to push a 5-point lead to 15-point lead. The rest of the half so ebb and flows by both teams and the Mountain Hawks were up by 11 at halftime.
Early in the second half Lehigh pushed the lead back to 14 and there was a feeling that the game was about to get away from American. That’s when the Eagles buckled down and showed some fight. AU was able to get as close as 3 in the second half but Kempton and the gang were too much.
