Canelo Alvarez knocks out Liam Smith – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez knocked out Liam Smith in the 9th round and in the process won Smith’s previously held 154 pound belt. Of course, the questions after the fight were about a potential match up with Gennady Golovkin.
HBO’s Max Kellerman seems to think Golden Boy Promotions, IE Oscar Dela Hoya, is to blame for the super bout not being made yet. Hopefully for boxing fans, this fight takes place by next September.
In Gee Chun Wins the Evian – Not only did In Gee Chun win the Evian by four strokes but she made a 10 footer to set the record for the lowest score in a Major at 21 under. This was Chun’s second major. Chun won the US Women’s Open last year and became only the second player to have her first two LPGA victories come in Majors.
George Washington University fires Mike Lonergan – Over the summer, GW looked into allegations of verbal and emotional abuse in the men’s basketball program. During Lonergan’s 5 year stay in Foggy Bottom, 13 players have transferred out of the program.
Team Europe shocks Team USA in their World Cup of Hockey Opener – Team Europe upended Team USA 3-0 in their World Cup of Hockey Opener. Marian Gaborik, Leon Draisaitl and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored for Team Europe. Other winners over the weekend were Canada, Sweden and Team North America.
