A Look at Mikey Garcia-Jessie Vargas

Garcia and Vargas Square Off in Texas on Saturday night

Mikey Garcia (39-1) and Jessie Vargas will be coming into this weekend’s fight in different mindset.

Garcia will be coming in seeking redemption after his loss to Errol Spence. Garcia moved up two weight classes to face Spence in AT&T Stadium (Dallas, TX).

Garcia struggled dealing with Spence’s hand speed all night. Not only did Garcia suffer his first loss that night, all the scorecards were lopsided. He would be met by a extremely sharp Spence who was in total control of just about every round. The official scorecards had Spence winning 120-107 (twice) and 120-108.

The loss hasn’t deterred Garcia as he chose to stay at welterweight to take the fight with Vargas (29-2-2). “I need to show my fans and the boxing world that I can do a lot more, even at 147lbs,” said Garcia. The draw for Garcia staying at 147 lbs is the chance to win a world title in his 5th weight class.

In Vargas’ last outing, he stopped Humberto Soto in the 6th round with a devastating right hand. The Soto fight was the first of, what was thought to be a move to 154 lbs but Soto came back down to 147 lbs to fight Garcia.”Mikey is a terrific fighter and we are going to give the fans a great fight, it has all the ingredients to be like a Barerra-Morales style trilogy, you never know because we are two fighters that are will to do anything to come out with the victory,” said Vargas.

The Soto win was Vargas’ second win in his last four fights. The other two ended in a majority draw.

Prediction:

Garcia struggled at 147 lbs against while Vargas is coming down to the weight. Neither fighter is fighting an opponent that looks like their last fight so it’s hard to measure these two.

If you believe Garcia is truly at the correct weight, he should have enough to beat Vargas. If not, Vargas’ right hand could be difference in the fight.

Time will tell if it will have exciting moments like the Barrera-Morales trilogy but, at the very least, it will be an entertaining fight.

In a razor close fight, Garcia will win by split decision.
