Georgetown broke out a new starting lineup but unfortunately for the Hoyas, the result was the same. Once again Georgetown loses a home conference game in the waning minutes. This time it was Creighton who came to DC and walked away with a 91-87 win.
Georgetown head coach, Patrick Ewing, made two changes to his starting lineup. Out was Jamorko Pickett and James Akinjo and in was Greg Malinowski and Jagan Mosely.
Both teams got off to a slow start shooting the ball but then it picked up. Creighton’s leading scorer, Ty-Shon Alexander, went for 16 points on 5-8 (4-6 from the three point line) shooting in the first half. No matter who the Hoyas put on his, Alexander consistently got into his scoring zone. When Alexander wasn’t scoring from the perimeter, the Bluejays attacked Govan inside. Most of the success came from back up, Samson Froling. Froling had 7 in the first half. He averages 4.4 points per game this season.
Georgetown’s success on offense came from the same place it’s come from the last few games. Jessie Govan and Mac McClung had 10 a piece in the first half. Govan was able to put the ball on the floor and get into the lane while McClung was doing more “catch and shoot”. Early in the season, McClung tended to try to create everything off the dribble.
The Hoyas went into the locker room with a 42-41 lead.
The lead didn’t last long. Creighton came out in the second half on a 12-5 run, forcing Georgetown head coach, Patrick Ewing to call timeout. At the time, Georgetown had more turnovers (3) than made field goals (2) in the half.
The Bluejays would get up by as much as seven in the second half before Georgetown woke and went on a run. With Akinjo penetrating and pushing the ball, the hit six shots in the row tying the game at 70.
The game would go back and forth with Georgetown taking a three point lead with 2:45 left. But, once again, they couldn’t hold it. After Davion Mintz scored on a nifty EuroStep move in the paint, Mourning would turn it over on the inbounds. Mintz would miss the layup but then Akinjo would turn the ball over and commit a foul right after that. Mintz would make both free throws giving Creighton a 1 point lead. Akinjo hit a three pointer giving Georgetown their last lead of the game.
Creighton would close the game on an 8-2 run for the final tally.
