The Time is Right for Wilder-Fury

This might be the most difficult era to make a world class boxing match. So many things have to be taking into consideration beyond the split. You have competing cable providers, management companies and motives when it comes to locations. But where’s a will, there’s a way and we’re seeing that with Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.

Don’t get it twisted. They didn’t make that fight because they wanted to give the fans what they want. They both need the fight like Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns.

Wilder has been involved in a difficult negotiation with Anthony Joshua. Depending on whose camp you believe, the difficulty stems from one of them not willing the sign a supposed deal. Fury is coming back into the sport after some time off to address some personal demons.

It’s set up two undefeated champions who fans know to face each other without all of the delays and contractual mumbo jumbo. It also presents two personality filled fighters that will make the press tour more than entertaining. It could be slightly below the press tour for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Ricky Hatton where there was a lot of emotion stoked among fan bases.

How big is this fight? XM’s Boxing Channel did a poll asking which fight were fans more excited to see? Wilder-Fury or Canelo-GGG? Wilder-Fury won in a landslide.

Timing is everything. GGG-Canelo 2 will make plenty of money because it’s the “right fight” but Fury-Wilder is appealing because it’s a fan friendly fight. Both fighters have more personality than GGG and Canelo combined. They will make it entertaining in and out of the ring. They will press each other with their styles being so different.

Fury will use his movement and his jab to try and control the fight. He does it in a fashion that doesn’t look as robotic and stiff as Canelo. Wilder provides a difficult style because he’s so unconventional. He leaves himself open constantly as he tries to unleash bomb after bomb. He will stalk Fury. Throw punches from every angle. Both fighters will trash talk each other. It will be fun and exciting because it’s the “anti-suits” fight.

It was a fight made at the right time. The fighters are on display not the management entities. There aren’t any Oscar Dela Hoya’s or Eddie Hearn’s running in front of the camera. It’s two entertaining fighters willing to give us a good show.
