Citi Open is Washington’s Cooling Event

July and August can be sweltering times in the Nation’s Capital. For baseball fans, it’s the dog days of summer. For NFL fans, it’s a time to get excited about training camp.

But, for tennis fans, there’s a tournament perfectly tucked into the calendar between Wimbledon and the US Open. The Citi Open has a long history. It started in 1969 and was known as the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Past champions included Jimmy Connors, Arthur Ashe, Ivan Lendl and Andre Agassi. On the women’s side, past champions include Svetlana Kuznetsova and Sloane Stephens.

The US Open still attracts top competition. This year’s event will include Wimbledon semifinalist John Isner and runner-up Kevin Anderson. Andy Murray will continue his comeback in the DC event. The women’s bracket features big names such as Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka.

Dates: July 26-August 5 at Location: Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, Washington DC
