Instant Reaction: Maryland vs UMES

Game Wrap

Coach Mark Turgeon’s group came out and did what you’re supposed to do to a team like UMES… they blew them out by 53. The Terps came out focused and made this a laugher in the first half.

The Good

Everything. HA! Maryland’s ball movement was exquisite and despite the gaudy number of assists, it was even better than those numbers. Terps played about as unselfish as a team could play.

They were 9-19 from the three point line. Jared Nickens was red hot from long distance hitting all 4 of his three pointers. Many of them were wide open looks as Maryland constantly got open shots at the end of the swing.

The great shooting wasn’t only from the three point line. The Terps shot 61.1% from the floor.

Defensively they held the Hawks to 33.9% shooting including a paltry 15.8% from the 3 point line.

The Bad

The only bad you can really focus on is the free throw shooting. The Terps got to the line 33 times (21 in the first half) and only 21 of them. Making only 63.6% of your free throws isn’t going to get the bills paid against a better team.

Maryland took the drama out early on, and for the starters, this looked like an extension of a scrimmage. The offensive efficiency was impressive and the unselfishness showed up in all facets of the game.
