Instant Reaction: Georgetown vs Mount St. Mary’s

Final: Georgetown 102  Mount St. Mary’s 68

Game Wrap

The Hoyas jumped out early but really stretched the lead midway through the first half en route to a 102-68 win. The Hoyas were lead by Govan’s 20 point, 14 rebound performance. He was one of five players in double figures.

The Good

First and foremost, scoring 102 points. The big question before the season was whether Ewing could implement his style of play with recruits from the previous regime.

After shooting 63% in the first half, the Hoyas cooled off a bit (not much) and finished the game shooting an impressive 57% for the game. That included hitting 50% (11-22),of their shots from the three point line.

The second chance points domination played a key role. The Hoyas had 18 second half points while the Mountaineers had 0.

The Bad

Too many defensive miscommunications led to 48% shooting in the first half by the Mountaineers. Even though their percentage dipped in the second half, Georgetown was still dogged by defensive lapses.

The turnovers were a bug-a-boo all night. The Hoyas finished the game with 16.

“While we’re pushing it (ball), we have to cut down on our turnovers” – Coach Ewing

The Hoyas did what they were supposed to do against an opponent like this one. Scoring 102 points and shooting 50% from the three point line shows that Ewing’s offense is being run in an efficient and effective manner. But, as he’s pointed out in the first two games, they have to cut down on the turnovers.
