Instant Reaction: Georgetown vs Jacksonville Dolphins

Game Wrap

The Hoyas (1-) opened up the Ewing era with a a 73-57 win over the Jacksonville Dolphins (0-2). The Hoyas were lead by Jessie Govan and Marcus Derrickson. Both scored 20 points as the Hoyas pulled away in the second half.

The Good

A big win in Coach Patrick Ewing’s debut. Could you imagine what the naysayers would say had this game been close or, worse, if the Hoyas loss?

Georgetown was led by Jessie Govan and Marcus Derrickson. Govan ripped out to 5 early points and then the offense forgot about him. But, they quickly remembered (or was reminded at halftime) about him and he exploded on offense and on the boards. He scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the second half on his way to a 20 point, 15 rebound performance.

Derrickson’s game was a balanced effort. He was 7-12 from the field including, 4-7 from the three point line finishing with 20 points and 8 rebounds.

The three point shooting was also part of the news. As a team, the Hoyas shot 10-26 (69%) from the three point line.

Last but not least, there was a buzz in the arena. Former Hoyas, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo joined current Hoya, Otto Porter in the crowd. Also there was a special guest, Michael Jordan, in the suite watching on his former Dream Team teammate.

The Bad

The Hoyas rebounding left a lot to be desired. They ended up tied at 37 but were down in the rebounding category most of the game. This was brought up by both Coach Ewing and Derrickson/Govan. What makes it even more concerning is the Dolphins had 15 offensive rebounds.

Turnovers were also a problem. Though this is expected in the first game with a new system, 18 turnovers is still very high.

Despite what most Hoyas fans would want, this is what is to be expected. A blowout win with a lot of items to work. The home team should be optimistic by Govan and Derrickson leading the way. This is something that will be needed until the newer players can get acclimated with the college game.
