US Starts Their AmeriCup Journey with a Victory

Team USA got off to a fast start in their first AmeriCup 2017 game, defeating Panama, 97-56.

The team is comprised of NBA G-League and players playing overseas.

The Americans were led by Darrun Hilliard  and Jonathan Holmes. Both players scored 17 points while Marshall Plumless pulled down 13 rebounds.

The US got off to a fast start and had a 27-10 lead after the first quarter. When asked about the fast start, Coach Jeff Van Gundy said

Well, we set a better tone today with our starters than we did in our exhibition against the Dominican Republic. Our defense was good early. There’s a lot to improve on, but not as much time to really do it. So, we just have to gather ourselves. We are playing a true road game tomorrow against Uruguay, and we’re looking forward to it.

Part of the fast start was the American defense. They held Panama to 28% shooting in the first half.

But the story was the offense. Team USA had 29 assists on 34 made field goals. Larry Drew II led the team with 7 assists while Kendall Marshall chipped in 6 and Xavier Munford had 5.

If there was a negative, it was the 13 turnovers.

The US Team’s next game will be against host,Uruguay. Coach Van Gundy’s expects a dog fight.

They have home court advantage. Obviously, we are here in their city in their country, and they will have the support of their fans and everyone behind them. It’s going to be a tough game, but we just have to stay focused and stay together and do what we do.
